Marsden Walking Weekend – 15th 16th September 2018

It’s been a busy time for me these last few months, witness fewer posts (although there are some walks writeups in my Drafts folder).

One of those sources of busyness has been the planning of the inaugural Marsden Walking Weekend.

Which I thought would be a good thing, when I raised it in one of our planning meetings, a few months back. And it will be, it’s just been surprisingly time-consuming to get off the ground.

That it’s now in the diary, in print and we’re selling tickets (some events / walks are FOC) is thanks to the enthusiasm and fortitude of the other Walkers Are Welcome committee members – Jenny, David, Jo and Taru.

If you are based in the area or want an excuse (not that you need one) to visit this part of the world, have a look at the Walking Weekend itinerary on our website.

To give you a feel for what the weekend will host, here is an extract from the press release we have shared:

“There’s a great choice of guided walks, some focused on the town, others heading out to woodland and moorland. Walks cover both shorter walks and more challenging hikes on the moors. Some of the walks are family-friendly and we’ll also be using the weekend to launch the ‘Marsden Film and Television Trail’.

There will also be the chance to try your hand at Nordic walking, learn more about the history of Marsden on a new trail or to head out to the nature reserve to listen to poetry and get involved in a discussion about poetry and the landscape, over a cuppa, afterwards.

There will be stalls from a host of community and outdoors organisations and vendors, locally sourced food, a bar and an evening film on Saturday. All housed in the ‘hub’ for the weekend, Marsden Mechanics Institute.”

We are hoping for lots of interest, particularly as it is part of the popular South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival.

It would be great to see you, we can already claim some international visitors ( and I don’t mean folks nearby but who are outside of Yorkshire).

And the weekend will see a set of newly redesigned waymarked walk leaflets. The existing routes were checked, new maps created and new photos taken at key points on each route. Again, lots of work by the committee and also from Anita Kelly, the leaflet designer.

Thanks to the Cuckoos Nest, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, the team at Kirklees Public Rights Of Way, Skipton Building Socirty Grassroots team, Yorkshire Avalanche Dodgers .. and Diane, Emily, Tom, Michael and others (the Marsden WaW ‘old guard’) who launched the first set of leaflets a few years back.

There are still fuller sets of historical facts for each walk, written by Marsden History Group, available as download sheets on our website.

A great job all around, and particularly as we all have day jobs and running MWaW (like many many organisations up and down the country) is done by volunteers.

    • It went really well thanks! I just haven’t had time to write it up yet. As an inaugural weekend we were pleased with having 250+ participants across the various walks and talks. And (mostly) good weather too. Great stuff.
