Cairn Gorm summit

Aviemore and Cairn Gorm

I had a long weekend away with mates, staying in Aviemore. The trip (as usual) saw various combinations of us walking Munros and ridges of differing difficulty and conditions.

My ‘main walk’ was up a snowy Cairn Gorm with friend Roger, which was slow going for me with an ongoing painful Achilles tendon issue. I had some very effective physio 3 years or so ago but I have damaged it again.. too fond of walking off-piste on Marsden Moor I think.

Ankle hobble aside, it was a great walk and with some driving snow at the top for dramatic effect. I think if we had approached the summit from another route and not from the busy cafe (which we had had a pit stop at) it would have felt a bit more Nan Shephard.

The Sunday saw Roger and I walking from Aviemore out to Loch An Eilein for a 12-mile hike.

Aviemore Stone Circle
Before we headed to the loch I wanted to have a look at Aviemore Stone Circle (I enjoy some stone bothering).
This was one of the strangest locations… not for the Stone Circle, but for the bungalow that was built just a few metres from it.

The trip coincided with Anita and I’s wedding anniversary but Anita was brilliant and waved me off, romantic fools that we are. As with all of our trips, there was communal cooking both evenings and mornings. I made the big breakfast on one day, which was a substitute for the cooked breakfast that I would have made for Anita had I been home for our anniversary!
